Abstract: Optical tweezers offer a non-contact approach to control the position and orientation of mesoscale objects using optical forces, and can even assemblemicro-/nanostructures from different materials. Among them, optical manipulation of metallicnanomaterials is especially complex due to their unique plasmonic properties. In this talk, I will discuss the interactions of light with plasmonicnanostructures and introduce the technique of using structured optical fields to tailor optical trapping and manipulation of silver and gold nanostructures. I will also show light-mediated self-organization of silver nanoparticles via optical binding interactions, and discuss how electrodynamics potential energy surfaces and the associated reaction paths govern self-organization of optical matter.
 
Bio:
Zijie Yan received B.S. and M.S. degrees inMaterial Science and Engineering  and Physical Electronics from HuazhongUniversity of Science and Engineering in 2005 and 2007, Ph.D degree in Material Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2011. From 2011 on, he worked at University of Chicago as postdoctoral scholar. His current research focuses on optical trapping and manipulation ofplasmonic nanostructures, laser-induced self-assembly(optical matter), laser beam shaping and electrodynamics simulations.
