报告摘要:
There is hardly a research topic in history that could stir up so much enthusiasm in the scientific community and, at the same time, lots of aversion on the other hand, as did invisibility cloaking. Whether it is a real revolution towards the long-cherished dream, or merely a blue-sky physics hype that cannot last for long, still lacks a clear picture to draw the conclusion, not to mention how to guide the road ahead. In this talk, I will review the existing knowledge of invisibility cloaking based on transformation optics from an integrated science and engineering perspective. Several significant electromagnetic problems that have resulted in intense discussions in the past few years will be clarified in terms of propagation, scattering, radiation and fabrication. I will also introduce our recent progress in achieving invisibility cloaking. Finally, the road ahead toward invisibility cloaking and transformation optics will be discussed from my viewpoint.
简历:
Dr. Baile ZHANG is currently a Nanyang Assistant Professor in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was a postdoctoral associate at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre from 2009 to 2011. He received his Ph.D. in 2009 from MIT, following his B.S. degree in 2003 and M. S. degree in 2006 from Tsinghua University in Beijing, all majored in Electrical Engineering. His current research interests include electromagnetic wave theory and applications, metamaterials, optical microscopy, and photonics. His recent work of invisibility cloaking was voted as the 4th place of “Top 10 Breakthroughs of 2010” by Physics World, and as the 57th place of "Top 100 Stories of 2011" by Discover Magazine. He is a recipient of MIT Technology Review TR35 Global Young Innovators Award of 2012, which “honors the top 35 innovators under the age of 35.” He was invited to give a TED Talk at TED2013 Conference in Long Beach, California, as the first Chinese TED Fellow, and was highlighted as one of "20 Super Cool People" attending this conference. He serves on the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports, a new journal from Nature Publishing Group.
