1. Macro/micro-nonuniformities in optical micro/nanofibers

Abstract
The shape and surface quality of optical micro/nanofibers determine their transmission characteristics which are critical for their applications. In this lecture, the results of theoretical and experimental study of macro- and micro-nonuniformities in optical micro/nanofibers are presented. First, the theory of adiabatic nanotapers is described. One of the interesting conclusions of this theory is the discovery of the fundamental limit for the diameter of an optical nanofiber that can transmit light. The experiments that confirm this prediction are reviewed. Next, the theory and results of experimental measurements of silica microfiber micro-nonuniformities are considered. In particular, a simple experimental setup that allows to measure the microfiber nonuniformities with subnanometer accuracy is described.

Abstract
Miniature optical microfiber coil resonator (MCR) and microfiber coil waveguide (MCW) are the devices that can be fabricated by wounding a microfiber on a central rod. In this lecture, the theory of the MCR and MCW and the progress in their fabrication and applications are reviewed. First, the theory and applications of an MCR are considered. The resonant behavior of the MCR is determined by evanescent coupling between the microfiber turns. Transmission characteristics of an MCR are surprisingly different from those of the known types of resonators. This device can potentially perform filtering, dispersion compensation, sensing, and other functions. Next, the optical MCW composed of a several micron diameter microfiber supporting the whispering gallery modes is considered. Applications of MCW as a miniature broadband low-loss optical delay line and a refractometric sensor are discussed.

Dr. M. Sumetsky graduated from St. Petersburg State University, Russia (1975) and has Ph.D. (1979) and D.Sc. (1989) degrees from the same University. In 1979 he joined the Physics Department of St. Petersburg University of Telecommunications and since 1995 worked at the Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies. After transition of the Optical Fiber Research Department of Bell Labs into the OFS Labs of the Furukawa Electric Company in 2001, he joined the OFS Labs. Dr. Sumetsky has more than 100 publications in optics and quantum mechanics. His present research interests are in optics of micro/nanofibers and microresonators.
