Abstract
A review is given on recent progresses of silicon photonics for on-chip light manipulation, including the following parts. The first one is for passive silicon nanophotonic devices for on-chip polarization-handling, mode-manipulation, and wavelength-filtering. In particular, some research highlights are presented, including (1) high-performance polarization-beam splitters with very low losses and high extinction ratios in an ultra-broad bandwidth (>200nm); (2) multi-channel mode (de)multiplexers and compact multimode waveguide bends (~10μm); and (3) microring resonators with an ultra-large free-spectral range (>93nm) and an ultra-high Q-factor (>2×106). The second part is for the realization of waveguide photodetectors on silicon by combining two-dimensional materials and silicon nanophotonic waveguides. Here graphene and black-phosphorus are introduced and high-speed waveguide photodetectors have been realized on silicon for the wavelength beyond 1.55μm.
