Course No1121124
TitleThin film optics and technology
Class Hours/Week:  3-1                  Credit: 2                  Category: Prerequisites
Physical
Course objectives and basic requirements:
The course is designed for the graduate students to understand the present situation and   developing tendency, the basic theories and design methods of optical coatings, and will be able to finish the design of the typical thin film systems. Meanwhile students should understand  manufacture methods and performance measurements of thin films,so that can directly engage in research of optical coatings.

The students should:

1.understand the present situation and developing tendency of optical coatings;
2.understand the basic theories and design methods of thin films;
3.understand how to select the prepaering parameters and manufacture methods as well as performance measurements
Course introduction:
The course mainly involves two parts, that are thin film optics and thin film technology. The thin film optics is prepared to introduce basic theory and design methods of optical coatings, which involves Maxwell’s equations, reflection and refraction of plane electromagnetic waves on the simple boundary, reflectance and transmittance calculation of a thin film and an assembly of thin films, analytical design technology as well as design of typical multilayer systems, such as antireflective coatings, beam splitters, high reflective coatings, inteference edge filters, band-pass filters and some spacial coatings. The thin film technology mainly introduce production of coatings and performance measurements which involves vacuum deposition process, thin film materials, thickness monitoring and layer uniformity, thin film microstructure and behaviour, factors affecting layer and coating properties, as well as measurement of the optical and mechanical properties.
