Class Hours/Week:  3-1                  Credit: 2                  Category: Specialty
Prerequisites
Optical Engineering
Test and Grading Criteria exam(60%)+project(30%)+others(10%)
Course objectives and basic requirements:
The course is designed for the graduate students to understand the basic principles of optical design, the problems in optical design for conventional and modern optical systems, and design conventional amd spetial optical systems using softwares and so on.
The students should:
1.understand fundamental principles of optical design;
2.know the design methods to generate the initial structures of optical systems;
3.know the characteristics of various optical systems and learn the optimization design methods of complex optical systems;
4.complete an optical system design project.
Course introduction:
The course is prepared for advanced students to introduce the principles of Gaussian optics, primary aberration theories, the initial structure generation of optical systems, the application of aspherical surfaces in optical systems, the principles of modern optical system design and the optimization design for complex optical systems composed of several components. Fermat’s principle is discussed in detail in Gaussian optics including its Lagrange description and Hamiltonian description, optical path function and the relationship of wave optics and geometrical optics. Based on Gaussian optics the primary aberrations and their beam structure are introduced. The students will also learn the initial optical structure generation, the mathematical description of aspherical surfaces and the features of aberrations, and they will further study the principles and merit characteristics of laser systems, Fourier systems and other non-conventional optical systems, and then research the optimization optical design for the systems composed of several components including zoom lens systems. It is necessary for the students to complete an optical system design project.
