Course introduction:
The module is designed to understand the measurement and quality of solid state sources such as LED sources. The source has many advantages comparing with conventional sources such as energy saving, low carbon footprint, longer life and most importantly, adjustable spectral power distribution. The latter makes it adaptable to different environment. However, it has different physical properties such as small size and spatial arrangement. Hence, various conventional quality measures need to be improved for solid state sources, such as glare, color rendering, flicker, etc.
This module will be divided into 5 parts. Part 1 introduces the fundamental of light and color measurement, the background of lighting quality. This will be followed by Part 2 including the theory behind different technologies for measuring lighting and color together with a real practice. Part 3 will cover the psychophysical experiment designed to evaluate the quality of different lighting quality measures. Part 4 will cover various lighting quality metrics. Part 5 will introduce the impact of solid state lighting on wellbeing and their measuring methods. Part 6 introduces the intelligent lighting systems and its applications.
