Optical Science and Engineering College Supports Excellent PhD students of Zhejiang Univ. SPIE Club to Visit the Optical Industry of Singapore

Dec10

From December 4th to 11th, 2019, the optical science and engineering college of Zhejiang university sponsored the Zhejiang Univ. SPIE club to visit the optical industry of Singapore. This activity is jointly organized by Zhejiang Univ. SPIE club and SPIE Singapore club. The main content of this activity is to visit the optical teams and their laboratories in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS), the related companies in Singapore, conduct academic exchanges with SPIE Singapore club, and learn about the optical industry in Singapore.

NTU is a world-renowned research university with a reputation in many fields such as nanomaterials, biomaterials, functional ceramics and polymer materials. NUS is one of the top 30 universities in the world and a well-known institution of higher learning in the Asia-Pacific region.

The main itineraries of this program are as follow:

The visiting team, consisting of 6 PhD students of Zhejiang Univ. SPIE club, arrived at Changi Airport at 8:30 pm on December 4th, Singapore time.

On December 5th, the team visited Prof. Liu Aiqun's research group and exchanged views. Prof. Liu hosted a seminar where everyone gave a brief introduction to their work and corresponding lab. Prof. Liu listened to the reports and gave suggestions for our research work. After the meeting, the team had lunch with the Prof. Liu team and discussed more. After lunch, the students from Prof. Liu's team took us to visit their labs and introduce some of their work. After the visit, we visited the campus of Nanyang Technological University. Its modern and unique architectural design made us understand the charm of this young university.

From December 6th to 10th, led by He Xiaoyu, President of Singapore SPIE club, our team visited Optics labs in NTU and NUS, optical companies in Singapore, and participated in Optical Academic Workshop in NUS, which was organized by Prof. Aaron Danner, advisor of Singapore SPIE Chapter.

On the morning of the 6th, we visited the Photonics Institute (TPI) of NTU, which was established in October 2014. It was established by NTU in cooperation with the Optoelectronic Research Center (ORC) of Southampton University, including the Optical Fiber Technology Center (COFT), Destructive Photonic Technology Center (CDPT), Center for Optical and Laser Engineering (COLE), Center for Excellence in Semiconductor Lighting and Display (LUMINOUS!), Center for Optoelectronics and Biophotonics (COEB), etc. The professor from the laboratory firstly introduced the overview of TPI to us through videos and powerpoints. We learned the latest research directions and progress of TPI. Then we visited some advanced equipment of the institute. TPI's advanced manage concepts and close cooperation with international counterparts are all worth learning.

After that, we visited Prof. Asundi's company, d'Optron Pte. Ltd. Prof. Asundi has been retired from NTU, but he is still active in optical research and industry. Prof. Asundi said that his research goal is to make optics more interesting for the public. Prof. Asundi established d'Optron Pte. Ltd. to apply scientific research to interesting products. A post-doctor of Prof. Asundi showed us some of their company's products, including 3D profilers, intelligent vision systems, etc.

In the afternoon, our team went to visit Wavelength Optoelectronics (Singapore) Company. Mr. Huang Shengdi, president of Wavelength Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd., is an alumnus of the college of optical science and engineering, Zhejiang University (1985). He warmly welcomed the students and introduced the company’s 17-year history and his entrepreneurial experience overseas. Mr. Huang Shengdi introduced the current status of the optical industry, the future development trend of the optical technology, and introduced the achievements made by the Wavelength company in the fields of diffractive optics, plane lenses, micro-optics and other fields. After that, Mr. Huang Shengdi took us to visit the company's various departments, and demonstrated the company's advanced R & D design and production capabilities.

On December 9th, we participated in the Optical Academic Workshop in NUS organized by the Prof. Aaron Danner, advisor of Singapore SPIE club. PhD students from Zhejiang Univ. SPIE club gave oral presentations, introducing the research content and the latest progress of their laboratory. At the same time, we listened to the presentations of outstanding students from the top optical laboratories of NTU and NUS. Everyone had a different research direction, including optical imaging and image processing, 3D detection, nonlinear optics, fiber optic sensing and other fields. The exchange meeting lasted a whole day. At the meeting, students from different optical fields exchanged and share their work progress and scientific research experience.

On December 10th, we visited several research groups of NUS. Prof. Quan Chenggen mainly researches optical measurement technology, laser metrology, optical non-destructive testing, micron and nano photonics measurement. Prof. Zhou Guangya mainly studies micro-nano electromechanical systems (MEMS / NEMS), optical micro-systems, nano-photonics, silicon photonics technology. Prof. Vincent Li's group has done a lot of work in the fields of bio-optical sensors, MEMS, NEMS, nanophotonics and nanotechnology. Prof. Aaron Danner's group focuses on photonic devices and applications.

Through this college-sponsored learning abroad trip, our PhD students have a more intuitive understanding of Singapore's optoelectronics field. Through participating in the academic exchange conference jointly organized by Zhejiang Univ. SPIE club and Singapore SPIE club, we met with the teachers and students majored in different optical research fields and opened eyes. Though the interviewing program, the PhD students opened up their field of vision, inspired new ideas, and helped enrich and develop their current research. Further more, by visiting some optics-related companies in Singapore, the members of Zhejiang Univ. SPIE club learned about the current status of Singapore's optical industry and had a clearer plan for future career development.
