Lecture on "Foreign Academician Campus Trip" by Zhejiang University――Professor Roel Baets, Academician of Belgium

Dec03

On the morning of November 22, ZhejiangUniversity's "Foreign Academician Campus Tour" lecture was held inRoom 212, Shao Yifu Science and Technology Museum, Yuquan Campus, ZhejiangUniversity. We invited Professor Roel Baets from Ghent University in Belgium tobring an academic report entitled "Latest Trends in SiliconPhotonics" to Zhejiang University masters and students this time. Morethan 80 teachers and students from related Colleges such as Optical Science andEngineering, Information Science and Electronic Engineering, etc. came to thisreport. Professor Dai Daoxin, the vice dean of the College of Optical Scienceand Engineering, hosted and made an academic introduction.

Professor RoelBaets divided the report into three sections: silicon photonics: the basics, establishedand emerging applications, and emerging technology trends. First, heintroduced some current basic technical researchessuch as Electro-OpticalModulation Options, Fiber Chip Coupling, Ge photodiodes and Gephotodetectors and so on. Then, he introduced the overview of the IMEC’sSilicon Photonics Platform and the development of The European SiliconPhotonics Alliance, and talked about the situation of China-EuropeInternational Silicon Photonics Course & Symposium held in Dalian thisAugust. After that, he introduced the established and emerging applications, including transceivers for Data centers and for Telecom, Frequency Modulated CWLidar, extending the wavelength range without leaving the CMOS FAB, applicationof Silicon nitride, very high Q resonators, beam steering with an on-chipoptical phased array, measuring pulse wave velocity for arterial stiffness andother technologies. As for the development trend of emerging technologies inthe future, Professor Roel Baets expounded his views from three aspects:Integration of light source, Better phase modulator, and Programmable photoniccircuits. At the end of the report, Academician Roel Baets concluded that it isnecessary to vigorously develop industrial manufacturing based on the existingCMOS process at this moment. New technologies covering from the visible lightto mid-IR will continue to emerge. Silicon photonics has endless potential andwill continue to grow and develop under the drive of the telecom/datacom needs.

During thelecture, the students listened carefully, took notes from time to time and madetheir own reflections on the problems. The conference venue was full and theresponse was enthusiastic and there was a strong academic atmosphere.Several students raised their ownquestions and Professor Roel Baets answered them one by one. After the meeting, some students and even related scientific researchers who came from outside theschool made further discussions with Roel Baets on their interested research direction. The vice dean Dai Daoxinthanked Professor Roel Baets for his attendance and gave him a souvenir.

Biography

RoelBaets has mainly worked in the field of integrated photonics. He has madecontributions to research on photonic integrated circuits, both in III-Vsemiconductors and in silicon. He also has led major research projects insilicon photonics in Europe. In 2006 he founded ePIXfab, the globally firstMulti-Project-Wafer service for silicon photonics. Roel Baets is also adirector of the multidisciplinary Center for Nano and Biphotonic(NB Photonics)at UGent, founded in 2010. He was co-founder of the European MSc programme inPhotonics.

RoelBaets is ab ERC grantee of the European Research Council and a Methusalemgrantee of the Flemish government. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, of the EuropeanOptical Society(EOS) and of the Optical Society(OSA).
