On the afternoon of June 6, Professor Tingye Li, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Chinese Academy of Engineering, a well-known scholar in optical fiber communication, was appointed as an honorary professor of Zhejiang University. On behalf of Zhejiang University, Vice-President Chu Jian presented a certificate of honorary professor to Prof. Li on the appointment ceremony.
Prof. Li Dingyi received his doctorate degree at Northwestern University and joined Bell Labs at AT&T in 1958. In late 1960s, he and his research team started pioneering research on light wave technology and system. Their achievements have been widely applied in worldwide telecommunication infrastructure networks. In 1990s, he headed the pioneering work of promoting WDM transport network, initiated and promoted the large-scale upgrade of long-distance communication network which fundamentally transformed light wave communication and contributed to the development of large-capacity information expressway. Prof. Li is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and is one of the seven foreign members at Chinese Academy of Engineering.
After the appointment ceremony, Prof. Li presented a report on “Strategic Research and Innovation in Optical Communications: An Excited State Lifetime of Forty Years at AT&T Bell Labs”.
Prof. Tingye Li is giving a lecture.
