“Add luster to the discipline & Help the discipline develop” -- the outstanding cases of "Add luster to the discipline" host by COSE in 2018 was released

At the beginning of 2018, the College of Optical Science andEngineering (COSE) launched the 2017 "Add luster to the discipline"outstanding case selection activity. This event received a warm response,effectively enhancing the construction of the “double first-class” college,forming a good atmosphere for strengthening cohesion and struggling for first-classrate. In order to further expand the influence of the discipline of opticalengineering of Zhejiang university, the college recently launched the 2018"Add luster to the discipline" outstanding cases selection activity.

The selection activity has received positive response fromstudents, faculty and staff, retirees, and alumni at home and abroad. Plenty ofrecommendation and self-recommendation materials are submitted by teachers andalumni of the college. Drawing on the successful experience of last year, thecollege invited representatives of students, faculty and staff, retirees, andalumni to form a selection group. Finally, nine outstanding cases are electedas the "Add luster to the discipline" outstanding cases in 2018.

In the future, COSE will continue to carry out such annualselection activity, continuously accumulating experience, publicizing advancedmodels, enhancing the reputation and influence of the discipline, and promotingthe construction of "double first-class" discipline.


2018 "Add luster to the discipline" outstandingcases (in no particular order)

Case 1:Opticalcamera applied to Chang ’e-4 has been successfully developed

In May 2018, the observation camera system for Chang 'e-4 relaysatellite was successfully developed by the team from Institute of Optical ImagingEngineering of COSE and launched along with the Chang 'e-4 relay satellite. Afterentering the preset orbit, the observation camera successfully acquired thehigh gain parabolic antenna image and completed the antenna surveillance task. Thedual-resolution camera captured the group photos of the earth and moon and separateclose-up images of the earth and the moon. This is the first time thatscientists get photos from the vicinity of L2 on the Earth-Moon Triangle Lagrangepoints in human history. In December 2018, the landing camera system designedand developed by the same team was launched with the Chang 'e-4 probe. OnJanuary 3, 2019, Chang 'e-4 successfully became the first probe in humanhistory that achieved soft landing on the far side of the moon. And the landingcamera also worked well with excellent imaging quality. The camera successfullyacquired the video of the whole landing process, making an importantcontribution to the successful completion of the first soft landing mission onthe far side of the moon.

Selected reason: The observation camera for relay satellite andthe landing camera for th probe developed by optical imaging engineering teamwas successfully applied in Chang 'e-4 lunar landing mission, which won greathonor and wide attention from the whole society and made outstandingcontributions to improving the reputation of optical engineering discipline of ZJU.


Case 2: Multiple research teams won awards and honors

The new super-resolution optical imaging technology proposedby LIU Xu's research team won the first prize of the first China Optical Scienceand Technology Award in 2018. Team members YANG Qing and KUANG Cuifang wereawarded 2018 National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholar of Chinaand 2018 National Natural Science Foundation of China for Instrument Project, respectively.Team member YANG Qing used nano-illumination to achieve unlabeledsuper-resolution microscopy on the far-field large-field film for the firsttime. This achievement has been selected as the “Top 10 progress of optics inChina in 2017 -- applied research branch” in March 2018. Team member KUANG Cuifangpublished his research in a top journal, Nature Communications. HE Sailing’s researchteam launched projects on methods and applications of subwavelength structureused to realize regulation on light and electromagnetism. Those researchesattained flexible and accurate regulation on light and electromagnetism with aseries of original research results, which won the first prize of Zhejiang NaturalScience Award in 2018. Liu Huafeng's team project "Key Technology for PET toObtain High-quality Imaging and Data Analysis" solved the problems of dualuncertainty of noise and model as well as problems in integrating physiologicalprior information. This project won the second prize of Zhejiang Natural ScienceAward in 2018.

Selected reason: those teams have made outstandingachievements in scientific research, won awards and honors, and attracted wideattention from the society. Their achievements have made outstandingcontributions to improving the reputation of the discipline of opticalengineering of ZJU.


Case 3 DI Dawei was selected as the annual "35 peopleunder 35 years old in scientific and technological innovation".

In 2018, five faculty from ZJU were selected into the second"35 people under 35 in scientific and technological innovation" listof China by MIT Technology Review. Among them, DI Dawei, researcher from COSE,won the title of "Pioneer" for his breakthrough in the basic researchof optoelectronic devices.

DI works in the fields of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED)and perovskite light-emitting diodes (perovskite LED). He deeply explored theprinciple of device luminescence. And together with his collaborators, he settwo world records for the luminescence efficiency OLED and perovskite LED withlow-cost solution method. DI's research is a milestone in the development of anew generation of high performance, low cost, energy saving and environmentalprotection light source, which is expected to be widely used in the fields ofdisplay, lighting and communication. He has published relevant results in topacademic journals such as Science and Nature Photonics (cover article) as thefirst author or corresponding author, and been reported as news and researchhighlights by top journals such as Nature Materials and Nature ReviewsChemistry. His research has gained high attention from internationalcounterparts.

Selected reason: Due to being selected into the second"35 people under 35 years old in scientific and technologicalinnovation" list of China by MIT Technology Review, DI Dawei has won greathonor and wide attention from the whole society and made outstandingcontributions to improving the reputation of optical engineering discipline ofZJU.


Case 4: Volunteer group of COSE actively engaged in socialservice

Since its establishment eight years ago, the volunteer groupof COSE has solidified and developed into a specific volunteer service modelwith college characteristics, mainly including two types of service, brandvolunteer service and regular volunteer service. Brand volunteer servicecombines with the subject characteristics, like partner assistance service. Themain partners are Changhe High School, Chaoshan Central Primary School and ZhejiangBlind School. The regular volunteer service aims to provide a platform for collegestudents to contact and serve the society. The main activities include West-LakeVolunteer Activities, Hangzhou Children's Library Volunteer Activities, ZhejiangScience and Technology Museum Volunteer Activities, etc.

In 2018, the volunteer group has served Hangzhou Children's Libraryfor 7 times, Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum for 6 times. More than 500volunteers are engaged in volunteer works for Zhejiang Blind School, National UniversityStudent Design Competition of Photoelectric, "The International Day of Light"series activities, the West-Lake International Optoelectronic Symposium and soon.

Case 5: Project guided by COSE won the gold medal of collegeinnovation and entrepreneurship competition

In October 2018, the innovation and entrepreneurship project“Chi-Yun Technology � National Leader of Vehicle Optical Display Technology”was recommended by COSE to participate in the fourth China "Internet+" College Innovation and Entrepreneurship and won the gold medal in thefinal competition among more than 400 entrepreneurship projects.

The project of “Chi-Yun Technology � National Leader ofVehicle Optical Display Technology” is directed by ZHENG Zhenrong, professor ofCOSE, and led by WANG Yunfan, alumnus of 2014. The project focuses on vehicle-mountedHUD intelligent software and hardware technology services. At present, Chi-Yun Technologyhas cooperated with Group, Dongfeng Motor, FAW Group and other domesticindependent brands of OEMs. It also works with well-known domestic and foreignautomotive suppliers to develop a variety of products. In addition, Chi-YunTechnology has cooperated with the Russian National Automotive EngineeringResearch Institute to develop a high-performance HUD system. It alsocollaborates with the Korean Railways to develop a train-specific HUD systemfor high-speed rail, passenger and freight trains in Korea.

The "Internet +" College Innovation and EntrepreneurshipCompetition has been held annually since 2015. It is the largest innovation andentrepreneurship competition in the world and the most prestigious andinfluential innovation and entrepreneurship event in China.

Case 6: Many faculties were elected into the new education expertteam of the Ministry of Education

In November 2018, the Ministry of Education set up the HigherEducation Teaching Committee for 2018-2022. According to statistics, COSE hasfive faculties elected as the new members of the committee. Among them, LIU Xu(alumnus of 1984, COSE) of ZJU was appointed as the vice chairman of the EducationCommittee of Electronic Information (EI) major, and the chairman of Opto-electronicInformation Science and Engineering (OISE) major. LIU Xiangdong (alumnus of 1984,COSE) of ZJU was appointed as the member of EI major and the secretary generalof OISE major. HU Xiaoyang (alumnus of 1984, COSE) of Zhejiang CommunicationUniversity, was appointed as the member of Fine Arts major. MA Jun (alumnus of 1986,COSE) of China Academy of Space Technology was appointed as the vice chairmanof Aerospace major. YANG Hongchen (alumnusof 1986, COSE) of China Criminal Police College was appointed as the secretarygeneral of Public Security Technology major.

LIU Xu, LIU Xiangdong, HU Xiaoyang and MA Jun were alsomembers of the Higher Education Teaching Committee of the Ministry of Educationfrom 2013 to 2017.

The new teaching committee has gathered the mostauthoritative experts in higher education and will undertake the work ofteaching research, consultation, guidance, evaluation and service in highereducation. It is an important force to comprehensively revitalize the elitegroup of undergraduate education and promote the reform and development ofhigher education.

Case 7: the local alumni association of COSE facilitates thediscipline development of the college

In November 2018, Shenzhen Alumni Association of COSE, ZJU wasestablished in Shenzhen. At the same time of the establishment conference, italso held the Emerging Optoelectronics Forum, focusing on the discussion of thedevelopment strategy and action plan of the optoelectronics industry. In theforum, attendants present reached a consensus on the coordinated development ofeducation and industry. The forum has played a positive role in promoting andsupporting the establishment of academic disciplines in Shenzhen.

In September 2018, Anhui alumni association was establishedin Hefei.

Zeng wen, secretary general of Shenzhen Alumni Association (alumnusof 1988), and WANG Qiang, President of Anhui Association (alumnus of 1988), havedone a lot of basic work in the preparatory process of the two association. Theyalso undertook relevant tasks of the COSE on behalf of the association. Theestablishment of the alumni association in the two places will further expandthe development and influence of the discipline in Southern China and EasternChina, marking the beginning of the college to jointly build a disciplinedevelopment community including teachers and students, retired faculty andstaff, and alumni at home and abroad with the help of alumni from all over theworld through alumni association.

Case 8: Ningbo Yongxin Optical Co. ltd. was successfullylisted on the A-share main board

MAO lei, alumnus of 1982, is the vice chairman and generalmanager of Ningbo Yongxin Optics Co., ltd. (hereinafter referred as YongxinOptics). On Sep. 10th, 2018, Yongxin Optics was successfully listedon the A-share main board in Shanghai stock exchange, becoming the first A-sharelisted company in Ningbo in 2018.

The development of Yongxin Optics cannot do without MAO’stireless hard work and scientific management. After graduating from the COSE in1982, MAO keeps focusing on the optical industry, sticking to precisionmanufacturing. He aims at transforming the old state-owned enterprise thatcould only produce medium- and low-end optical microscopes into a leadingenterprise in China's optical subdivision industry. The success of MAO and YongxinOptics is the result of the long-term leadership and support of the chairman CAOQidong. Under the leadership of CAO Qidong and MAO Lei, the company'sperformance has maintained a steady growth for 20 years. Both the Yongxin companyand Mr. MAO Lei have offered sponsorship and support for the academicdevelopment of the college for many times. The national major scientific instrumentresearch project undertaken by the company and the college were rated as the excellentproject. The international microscope standard ISO9345 written by the companyis about to be published. It is the first international standard that led byChinese people in the field of microscope and endoscope, which helps China towin more say for Chinese products in the world.

Being extremely sincere and kind, always seeking truth andinnovation. CAO Qidong, MAO lei and Yongxin optics under their leadership arethe models of ZJUers that successfully inherit and practice the school memo ofseeking truth.

Case 9: Many excellent alumni promoted the development ofthe opto-electronics industry through cross-industry cooperation

CHENG Houbo, alumnus of 1982, is the venture partner ofOriental Fortune Capital as well as the President of Shenzhen Capital Fortune; CUIJun, alumnus of 1984, is the senior partner of Beijing Deheng (Shenzhen) lawfirm; GAN Weimin, alumnus of 1986, is the manage partner of Guantao Zhongmaolaw firm.

As honorary President of Shenzhen COSE association, CHENGhas always paid close attention to the discipline development and assisted theconstruction of discipline development community. Recent years, CHENG’s teamhas increased the investment in the opto-electronic industry, which injectscapital vitality into the development of the industry. CUI Jun, the Presidentof Shenzhen COSE association, actively promoted the establishment of theacademic research base in Shenzhen, facilitated the smooth establishment ofShenzhen COSE association, and boosted the influence of the discipline. GAN Weiminhas always supported the innovation and entrepreneurship of alumni, played animportant role in supporting enterprises founded by alumni like Sunny Opticsentering the capital market, and made contributions to the transformation ofscientific and technological achievements to the industry.

In an age of reform and opening-up policy, CHENG Houbo, CUIJun and GAN Weimin have obtained significant achievements through hard working incross-industry, and never forgotten their initial mind. They always do theirbest to fund the college discipline development, to fosteropto-electronic industry, especially entrepreneurship program developed byalumni. They can be rated as the model of cross-industry compound talentsamong the alumni.
