Into the all-English original course “Silicon Photonics, Technology and Devices”

Nov06

The all-English original course - "SiliconPhotonics: Technology and Devices" opened by College of Optical Scienceand Engineering (COSE) of Zhejiang University (ZJU) was officially opened onOctober 15, 2018. The course is taught in English by Prof. Sergei Popov fromthe Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden. Associate Professor ErikForsberg serve as the responsible teacher and Associate Professor TANG Longhuaserve as the young assistant teacher.

Silicon photonics is a hot topic in photonicssubjects. It has great application potential in the fields of integratedoptical communication devices, on-chip optical interconnects, biophotonics andnonlinear optics. The main researches are silicon-based optical waveguides, passive components, light sources, optical modulation, photodetectors, surfaceplasmon excitation components, and silicon-based optoelectronic deviceprocesses and system integration, which are to solve problems of thephotoelectric interaction and influence in silicon, such as internallight-light, light-heat, light-machine, light-magnetic, light-biochemicalsensing behaviors. Meeting the urgent needs of high-speed, high-capacity,low-cost computer networks, broadband communication networks, IoT sensornetworks, and big data centers This course will help students understandcutting-edge research and develop their international perspective, improveEnglish expression and communication skills.

Prof. Popov giving a lecture

Professor Sergei Popov, from KTH, has a 40-years-experiencein optical research and teaching, and has been cooperating closely with the COSEfor nearly 10 years in the field of silicon photonics. In this course, Prof.Popov introduced silicon photonics technology and corresponding devices fromeight chapters, including silicon photonic waveguides, silicon-based activedevices, silicon-based plasma technology, and hybrid plasma technology. Studentsall listened with great interest. Through the study of this course, studentshave improved their understanding of silicon photonics, and have a clearer andmore intuitive understanding of the current industry development and researchpriorities.
