By folding a 200 nm diameter CdSe nanowire to form loop mirrors, Ph D student Xiao Yao (Director:Prof. Lingmin Tong)and his team member obtained single-mode laser emission around 738 nm wavelength with line width of 0.12 nm and low threshold. The mode selection is realized by the vernier effect of coupled cavities in the folded nanowire. In addition, the loop structure makes it possible to tune the nanowire cavity, opening an opportunity to realize a tunable single-mode nanowire laser. After the result published on Nano Letter [ Nano Lett. 11, 1122 (2011)], Nature reported it by title “Laser from a tiny wire” in its “Research Highlight This Week” section [ Nature 472, 139(2011)]. The article pointed out “suggesting that lasers created in this way could be made fully tunable.” Nature Nanotechnology also reported it by title “Nanolasers in the loop” in its “Research Highlight” section[Nature Nanotechnology 6, 194(2011)].The result also reported by Nature China, Physorg.com as research highlight.
