President and CEO of SPIE, International Society for Optical Engineering visited the Department of Optical Engineering

Jan05

Invited by Prof. Xu Liu, Director of Faculty of Information Technology, Dr. Ralph James, President of SPIE and Dr. Eugene Arthurs, CEO of SPIE visited the Department of Optical Engineering on Dec. 13, 2010.

The Society was founded in 1955 to bring together engineers from several technical disciplines involved in high-speed, optically based test and measurement. Since then, the field of optical engineering has evolved from a multidisciplinary amalgam of physics, electrical and mechanical engineering, and materials science into an identifiable discipline in its own right. Simultaneously, SPIE has grown into a vital international organization that addresses virtually all subfields associated with optics and photonics technologies and their many engineering, scientific, and commercial applications.

Dr. Ralph James and Dr. Eugene Arthurs were attending Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition 2010 in Shanghai. They took this opportunity came down Hangzhou by high speed train. This is the first time visit for both of them. Accompanied by Prof. Xu Liu and Prof. Lingmin Tong, Director of the Department of Optical Engineering, Dr. Ralph James and Dr. Eugene Arthurs visited State Key Laboratory Modern Optical Instrumentation. Dr. Ralph James gave a speech to faculties and students at 4:00pm. He introduced the SPIE’s history and specially the student organization. The SPIE student chapter provided many professional activities for its student members, give them an international exchange platform.

SPIE student chapter at the Department of Optical Engineering, ZJU was established on 31 August 2007. It has 31 students member now. The chapter organized and attended many national and international events. Through Dr. Ralph James’s speech, the students get more information about SPIE and will attend more SPIE activities, get more international experience.
