At the beginning of 2018, the College of Optical Science and Engineering (COSE) launched the 2017 "Add luster to the discipline" outstanding case selection activity. This event received a warm response, effectively enhancing the construction of the “double first-class” college, forming a good atmosphere for strengthening cohesion and struggling for first-class rate. In order to further expand the influence of the discipline of optical engineering of Zhejiang university, the college recently launched the 2018 "Add luster to the discipline" outstanding cases selection activity.
The selection activity has received positive response from students, faculty and staff, retirees, and alumni at home and abroad. Plenty of recommendation and self-recommendation materials are submitted by teachers and alumni of the college. Drawing on the successful experience of last year, the college invited representatives of students, faculty and staff, retirees, and alumni to form a selection group. Finally, nine outstanding cases are elected as the "Add luster to the discipline" outstanding cases in 2018.
In the future, COSE will continue to carry out such annual selection activity, continuously accumulating experience, publicizing advanced models, enhancing the reputation and influence of the discipline, and promoting the construction of "double first-class" discipline.
2018 "Add luster to the discipline" outstanding cases (in no particular order)
Case 1: Optical camera applied to Chang ’e-4 has been successfully developed
In May 2018, the observation camera system for Chang 'e-4 relay satellite was successfully developed by the team from Institute of Optical Imaging Engineering of COSE and launched along with the Chang 'e-4 relay satellite. After entering the preset orbit, the observation camera successfully acquired the high gain parabolic antenna image and completed the antenna surveillance task. The dual-resolution camera captured the group photos of the earth and moon and separate close-up images of the earth and the moon. This is the first time that scientists get photos from the vicinity of L2 on the Earth-Moon Triangle Lagrange points in human history. In December 2018, the landing camera system designed and developed by the same team was launched with the Chang 'e-4 probe. On January 3, 2019, Chang 'e-4 successfully became the first probe in human history that achieved soft landing on the far side of the moon. And the landing camera also worked well with excellent imaging quality. The camera successfully acquired the video of the whole landing process, making an important contribution to the successful completion of the first soft landing mission on the far side of the moon.

Selected reason: The observation camera for relay satellite and the landing camera for th probe developed by optical imaging engineering team was successfully applied in Chang 'e-4 lunar landing mission, which won great honor and wide attention from the whole society and made outstanding contributions to improving the reputation of optical engineering discipline of ZJU.
Case 2: Multiple research teams won awards and honors
The new super-resolution optical imaging technology proposed by LIU Xu's research team won the first prize of the first China Optical Science and Technology Award in 2018. Team members YANG Qing and KUANG Cuifang were awarded 2018 National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholar of China and 2018 National Natural Science Foundation of China for Instrument Project, respectively. Team member YANG Qing used nano-illumination to achieve unlabeled super-resolution microscopy on the far-field large-field film for the first time. This achievement has been selected as the “Top 10 progress of optics in China in 2017 -- applied research branch” in March 2018. Team member KUANG Cuifang published his research in a top journal, Nature Communications. HE Sailing’s research team launched projects on methods and applications of subwavelength structure used to realize regulation on light and electromagnetism. Those researches attained flexible and accurate regulation on light and electromagnetism with a series of original research results, which won the first prize of Zhejiang Natural Science Award in 2018. Liu Huafeng's team project "Key Technology for PET to Obtain High-quality Imaging and Data Analysis" solved the problems of dual uncertainty of noise and model as well as problems in integrating physiological prior information. This project won the second prize of Zhejiang Natural Science Award in 2018.

Case 3 DI Dawei was selected as the annual "35 people under 35 years old in scientific and technological innovation".
In 2018, five faculty from ZJU were selected into the second "35 people under 35 in scientific and technological innovation" list of China by MIT Technology Review. Among them, DI Dawei, researcher from COSE, won the title of "Pioneer" for his breakthrough in the basic research of optoelectronic devices.
DI works in the fields of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) and perovskite light-emitting diodes (perovskite LED). He deeply explored the principle of device luminescence. And together with his collaborators, he set two world records for the luminescence efficiency OLED and perovskite LED with low-cost solution method. DI's research is a milestone in the development of a new generation of high performance, low cost, energy saving and environmental protection light source, which is expected to be widely used in the fields of display, lighting and communication. He has published relevant results in top academic journals such as Science and Nature Photonics (cover article) as the first author or corresponding author, and been reported as news and research highlights by top journals such as Nature Materials and Nature Reviews Chemistry. His research has gained high attention from international counterparts.

Case 4: Volunteer group of COSE actively engaged in social service
Since its establishment eight years ago, the volunteer group of COSE has solidified and developed into a specific volunteer service model with college characteristics, mainly including two types of service, brand volunteer service and regular volunteer service. Brand volunteer service combines with the subject characteristics, like partner assistance service. The main partners are Changhe High School, Chaoshan Central Primary School and Zhejiang Blind School. The regular volunteer service aims to provide a platform for college students to contact and serve the society. The main activities include West-Lake Volunteer Activities, Hangzhou Children's Library Volunteer Activities, Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum Volunteer Activities, etc.
In 2018, the volunteer group has served Hangzhou Children's Library for 7 times, Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum for 6 times. More than 500 volunteers are engaged in volunteer works for Zhejiang Blind School, National University Student Design Competition of Photoelectric, "The International Day of Light" series activities, the West-Lake International Optoelectronic Symposium and so on.

Case 5: Project guided by COSE won the gold medal of college innovation and entrepreneurship competition
In October 2018, the innovation and entrepreneurship project “Chi-Yun Technology – National Leader of Vehicle Optical Display Technology” was recommended by COSE to participate in the fourth China "Internet +" College Innovation and Entrepreneurship and won the gold medal in the final competition among more than 400 entrepreneurship projects.
The project of “Chi-Yun Technology – National Leader of Vehicle Optical Display Technology” is directed by ZHENG Zhenrong, professor of COSE, and led by WANG Yunfan, alumnus of 2014. The project focuses on vehicle-mounted HUD intelligent software and hardware technology services. At present, Chi-Yun Technology has cooperated with Group, Dongfeng Motor, FAW Group and other domestic independent brands of OEMs. It also works with well-known domestic and foreign automotive suppliers to develop a variety of products. In addition, Chi-Yun Technology has cooperated with the Russian National Automotive Engineering Research Institute to develop a high-performance HUD system. It also collaborates with the Korean Railways to develop a train-specific HUD system for high-speed rail, passenger and freight trains in Korea.
The "Internet +" College Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has been held annually since 2015. It is the largest innovation and entrepreneurship competition in the world and the most prestigious and influential innovation and entrepreneurship event in China.

Case 6: Many faculties were elected into the new education expert team of the Ministry of Education
In November 2018, the Ministry of Education set up the Higher Education Teaching Committee for 2018-2022. According to statistics, COSE has five faculties elected as the new members of the committee. Among them, LIU Xu (alumnus of 1984, COSE) of ZJU was appointed as the vice chairman of the Education Committee of Electronic Information (EI) major, and the chairman of Opto-electronic Information Science and Engineering (OISE) major. LIU Xiangdong (alumnus of 1984, COSE) of ZJU was appointed as the member of EI major and the secretary general of OISE major. HU Xiaoyang (alumnus of 1984, COSE) of Zhejiang Communication University, was appointed as the member of Fine Arts major. MA Jun (alumnus of 1986, COSE) of China Academy of Space Technology was appointed as the vice chairman of Aerospace major. YANG Hongchen (alumnus of 1986, COSE) of China Criminal Police College was appointed as the secretary general of Public Security Technology major.
LIU Xu, LIU Xiangdong, HU Xiaoyang and MA Jun were also members of the Higher Education Teaching Committee of the Ministry of Education from 2013 to 2017.
The new teaching committee has gathered the most authoritative experts in higher education and will undertake the work of teaching research, consultation, guidance, evaluation and service in higher education. It is an important force to comprehensively revitalize the elite group of undergraduate education and promote the reform and development of higher education.

Case 7: the local alumni association of COSE facilitates the discipline development of the college
In November 2018, Shenzhen Alumni Association of COSE, ZJU was established in Shenzhen. At the same time of the establishment conference, it also held the Emerging Optoelectronics Forum, focusing on the discussion of the development strategy and action plan of the optoelectronics industry. In the forum, attendants present reached a consensus on the coordinated development of education and industry. The forum has played a positive role in promoting and supporting the establishment of academic disciplines in Shenzhen.
In September 2018, Anhui alumni association was established in Hefei.
Zeng wen, secretary general of Shenzhen Alumni Association (alumnus of 1988), and WANG Qiang, President of Anhui Association (alumnus of 1988), have done a lot of basic work in the preparatory process of the two association. They also undertook relevant tasks of the COSE on behalf of the association. The establishment of the alumni association in the two places will further expand the development and influence of the discipline in Southern China and Eastern China, marking the beginning of the college to jointly build a discipline development community including teachers and students, retired faculty and staff, and alumni at home and abroad with the help of alumni from all over the world through alumni association.

Case 8: Ningbo Yongxin Optical Co. ltd. was successfully listed on the A-share main board
MAO lei, alumnus of 1982, is the vice chairman and general manager of Ningbo Yongxin Optics Co., ltd. (hereinafter referred as Yongxin Optics). On Sep. 10th, 2018, Yongxin Optics was successfully listed on the A-share main board in Shanghai stock exchange, becoming the first A-share listed company in Ningbo in 2018.
The development of Yongxin Optics cannot do without MAO’s tireless hard work and scientific management. After graduating from the COSE in 1982, MAO keeps focusing on the optical industry, sticking to precision manufacturing. He aims at transforming the old state-owned enterprise that could only produce medium- and low-end optical microscopes into a leading enterprise in China's optical subdivision industry. The success of MAO and Yongxin Optics is the result of the long-term leadership and support of the chairman CAO Qidong. Under the leadership of CAO Qidong and MAO Lei, the company's performance has maintained a steady growth for 20 years. Both the Yongxin company and Mr. MAO Lei have offered sponsorship and support for the academic development of the college for many times. The national major scientific instrument research project undertaken by the company and the college were rated as the excellent project. The international microscope standard ISO9345 written by the company is about to be published. It is the first international standard that led by Chinese people in the field of microscope and endoscope, which helps China to win more say for Chinese products in the world.

CHENG Houbo, alumnus of 1982, is the venture partner of Oriental Fortune Capital as well as the President of Shenzhen Capital Fortune; CUI Jun, alumnus of 1984, is the senior partner of Beijing Deheng (Shenzhen) law firm; GAN Weimin, alumnus of 1986, is the manage partner of Guantao Zhongmao law firm.
As honorary President of Shenzhen COSE association, CHENG has always paid close attention to the discipline development and assisted the construction of discipline development community. Recent years, CHENG’s team has increased the investment in the opto-electronic industry, which injects capital vitality into the development of the industry. CUI Jun, the President of Shenzhen COSE association, actively promoted the establishment of the academic research base in Shenzhen, facilitated the smooth establishment of Shenzhen COSE association, and boosted the influence of the discipline. GAN Weimin has always supported the innovation and entrepreneurship of alumni, played an important role in supporting enterprises founded by alumni like Sunny Optics entering the capital market, and made contributions to the transformation of scientific and technological achievements to the industry.
In an age of reform and opening-up policy, CHENG Houbo, CUI Jun and GAN Weimin have obtained significant achievements through hard working in cross-industry, and never forgotten their initial mind. They always do their best to fund the college discipline development, to foster opto-electronic industry, especially entrepreneurship program developed by alumni.
